Charming rascal Tristan Northwood seems to have it all an ancient name, a noble inheritance, a lovely wife, and a son he adores. Women love him, men admire him, and it seems there is nothing he can't do, whether it's seducing a society wife or winning a carriage race. Little does society suspect that the name means nothing to him, the fortune is in his father's controlling hands, and he has no interest in his wife except a very distant friendship. Society bores him, and he takes dares because he only feels alive when he's dancing on the edge...until his wife's brother comes home from the wars.

Decorated war hero Major Charles Mountjoy jerks Tris out of his despair by inspiring feelings of passion Tris had never suspected himself capable of. Almost as terrifying as those feelings for Charles are the signs Charles might return his affection - or, even worse, that Charles sees the man Tristan has been trying so valiantly to hide from the world.

If this isn't a tour de force historical romance, it's darn close. Bottom line - read this book because you'll laugh, cry, clutch the arms of your chair when you find you can't keep the characters safe from a world spun into the abyss, and feel their need when they find each other. Divided in three books spanning thirty years, with most of the narrative occurring just before and during the Battle of Waterloo, the novel follows the story of aristocratic Tristan Northwood on a journey of self discovery that leads him into the arms and heart of Captain Charles Mountjoy, veteran ADC to the Duke of Wellington. Each book chronicles a different phase of the characters' lives and each has its own emotional rhythm and tone which works to compliment and enrich the other books. Speedwell's language not only evokes the texture of the Regency milieu but ranges from snappy, laugh out loud hilarity to reckless exuberance, from despair to tenderness while being true to each personality and situation. She weaves together family dysfunction, psychological trauma, addiction, suicide, politics, and the histories of both medicine and military conflict with carefully observed, sensitive portraits of fully realized individuals whom she treats with empathy and care. These qualities extend to scenes of physical intimacy, which are explicitly erotic in ways that serve the story and also the inner growth of her characters.
(Perhaps my one quibble is that the title, Kindred Hearts, by no means does justice to the complexity and intellectual heft of this book - but one can't have everything).

Kindred Hearts (Audible Audio Edition) Rowan Speedwell Paul Morey Dreamspinner Press Books Reviews

Quite interesting book, because the main character can be interpreted in several ways. Some would say he is immature, self-centred jerk, but I prefer to see him as a confused child of his time. It was not uncommon for people of the upper classes to have too little meaningful to pass time with, at least if they were heirs to the title and fortune and their father was still alive. They would not been allowed to join the army, because the family could not afford to lose the heir. And it was not usual to pursue an academic career either. Therefore there was a bit too much of partying and superficial pleasures.
Tristan is one of those unfortunate children. He was the sole child of a widowed father whose interests lay in securing the economic future of his son. It was his way to express his love for his son. The year-long lack of communication between father and son led to misunderstandings that grew to an almost insurmountable size. Tristan had led life full of dares. It was the only way he could feel alive. He longed for someone who could love him the way he was, but it seemed that neither his father nor the selfish women whose beds he frequented could fill that void. That he had inherited skills from his father was made clear through his creation of the fund for his wife and children, although to put together 40,000 pounds within six months was a very excessive amount in my view (I have read somewhere that 1000 pounds in year 1900 is equivalent to several millions of today's money).
Tristan seemed to be better off when he experienced that his little son recognized him. But it soon grew worse. It went so far that he felt he had no right to continue to live.
Tristan had - following his father's orders - married Charlotte. She is a very peculiar character. I cannot remember having read about someone similar. The closest I can come up with as description is asexual. She acts mostly friendly and sensible, but really quite indifferent.
But Charlotte has a twin-brother, Charles. Soldier since he was 16 and respected aide-de-camp to generals fighting against Napoleon. He returns home after Napoleon was sent to Elba and is preparing to switch career. Fortunately he is present so he can help Tristan through a life-threatening emergency. He also arouses Tristan's interest in medicine. Something that comes handy when the final battle of Waterloo occurs. Tristan's life has gained meaning and purpose and it turned out that he had come to the right "shelf". And in that process found his true love.
I purchased this one at the beginning of February and took a whole month to read it because it is so beautifully written, brilliantly plotted, and so damned well researched that I could not bear the thought that the next chapter might bring a series of disastrous occurrences for the main characters.

The disasters come, of course, but so do the smiles and a sense of comfort because in what appears to be her only attempt at historical m/m romance, Rowan Speedwell has given us an extraordinary cast of characters and one of the great families you will ever stumble across in a book of this genre, or any historical m/m romance for that matter.

Aristocrat Tristan Northwood and soldier Charles Mountjoy have many secrets, all of which are tossed like so many breadcrumbs on a gravelly path, and when they meet those secrets become undone, as well as crucial, to their lives and the plot. Historically accurate, sweetly written, lovingly crafted, you will not meet a better bunch than this group for all their foibles and misgivings about themselves and each other. Let's hear loud cheers especially for Charlotte (Lottie) Mountjoy, twin sister to Charles and wife to Tristan. This relationship is an absolute hoot, and a completely off-the-wall twist on a menage a trois.

Grab this one, don't let it go, you will never regret it.
